Match Report

Jersey travelled to Woking for this fixture against Westfield of the Allied Counties Youth League. Their Woking Park ground is less than half a mile north of Kingfield stadium home to Woking of the National Conference.

Westfield had won both their two previous rounds on “penalties” and both against Sussex opposition. Firstly, at Roffey after a 2-2 draw, then at home to Newhaven after a 1-1 game. However, in the league they had lost to Surrey rivals, Camberley Town (0-3) and Walton and Hersham (1-5). Their first team play at a level above Jersey, in the Isthmian Division 1 South-Central section.

Jersey made one change to the team that had defeated Eastbourne United in the previous round. Joey O’Toole started with Ed Jeffries on the bench along with two debutants, Leo Lagardere and Daniel Andrade. On a mild (16C) but misty evening with a pitch enlivened by pre match showers Jersey kicked off attacking the Eastern (Queen Elizabeth Way) end which sported a small covered stand. The start was 34 minutes late due to flight delays at Jersey airport.

Jersey were soon camped in the opposition half and it became a question of how many they would score despite the usual disruption of three half time changes.

Conor O’Keefe had an early shot deflected for a corner before Leighton Gilroy threaded a pass from the right flank into a gaping area in the centre. No one was there but Fergus Boyle reacted quickest and from twenty yards drilled a low shot through four covering defenders. Within a minute Gilroy himself had doubled the score when played in by Charlie Brennan from midfield. Callum Gilroy, playmaker Barry Beatson and O’Keeffe had further chances blocked before the former added the third. Damon Huckerby on the edge of the box returned a clearance which found Gilroy and his shot deflected off defender Paddy Tate and past captain Paddy Lima-Stoltman. Westfield changed to a 4-3-3 set up but before the interval Beatson lobbed in a diagonal cross from the left which Leighton Gilroy headed in at the far post.

Before Jersey’s three substitutes had settled after the interval Latham Roberts put in a twenty yard shot for the hosts which only just went wide of the right post. But it was a substitute who scored Jersey’s fifth. Daniel Andrade scoring just after the hour with a tap in after Leighton Gilroy set him up from the right. Shortly afterwards Gilroy claimed his hat trick when a long diagonal ball forward from brother Callum was lifted over Lima-Stoltman. Brennan hit the bar with a header before Lima-Stoltman brought off a triple save from shots from Beatson, Jeffries and Leighton Gilroy.

Boyle picked an injury with a quarter of an hour remaining so Jersey played out the remainder of the match with only ten players. Nevertheless, they continued to dominate proceedings and even added a seventh goal in added time. Beatson cleared a rare Westfield foray with a lofted fifty yard drive which Leighton Gilroy controlled on the volley, turned and rounded the advancing Lima-Stoltman before tapping home his fourth goal of the night to cap a rampant Jersey performance.
