Jersey Bulls received a bye in the Extra Preliminary Round and now travelled to Carshalton Athletic who had returned from Arundel with a 4-3 win on “penalties” after a 2-2 draw three weeks ago. Carshalton’s first team play in the Isthmian Premier Division, two levels above Jersey, so it was a stiff test although Carshalton had lost both their two previous games, one league, one league cup, both at home, both 2-3.
The grandstand seating had been overhauled with the club’s initials picked out in white amongst the red and the far side had an interesting array of a dozen different flags from nations around the world on the flagpoles running the length of it.
Jersey had three players making their debuts, Tiago Duarte in goal, Callum, brother of Leighton, Gilroy on the right flank and Kyle Wilson on the bench. On a warm (19C) humid evening with the sun still streaming in from the Park End Jersey kicked off attacking the Park End on the hosts relatively new 3G pitch.
Carshalton took an early lead with a good curling strike from Gordon Amfo-Bromi but Jersey settled in to the match and created numerous chances of their own and their supporters were frustrated by their profligacy.
Just after the half hour Jersey had their best chance yet when Leighton Gilroy reached the byline and cut the ball back for his brother to finish but Faebien Witter, the Carshalton ‘keeper, managed to recover and make a scrambling save. Charlie Brennan also put a header just wide but at the interval Carshalton still led.
Manager Paul Renton brought on both his substitutes at half time with Joey O’Toole and Wilson replacing Casey Nixon and Leighton Gilroy respectively.
Jersey’s continued to dominate and their perseverance paid off with an equaliser on the hour when Conor O’Keeffe converted a cross from Callum Gilroy. They continued attacking as they looked for a winner as they did not want the lottery of “penalties” after three losses by that method in last season’s cup competitions.
With eighteen minutes of normal time remaining a free kick was awarded to Jersey twenty yards out on the left corner of the penalty box. Joey O’Toole stepped up and curled the ball in to the top right corner giving Witter little chance of saving it with the ball nestling in to the side netting.
It was now Carshalton’s turn to strive for the equaliser and Malik Mohamed hit Duarte’s right post with five minutes left. Both Tomas Goncalves and Conor O’Keeffe picked up late cautions as Jersey defended their lead for a notable victory.
Jersey will now “host” the winners of a Sussex battle between Eastbourne United and Whitehawk (Brighton) in a fortnight. The match will probably have to be played on the mainland as it is likely to be a midweek fixture.
