Mike Bidmead Suburban League Challenge Cup
Uxbridge win 4-3 on penalties.
Jersey Bulls, finalists to Aldershot Town U19s last season, travelled to new opponents in North-West Middlesex, Uxbridge. Their first team play in the Isthmian League South-Central Division. Based at their Honeycroft ground in Horton Road, West Drayton since 1978, it is named after their former ground on the other side of the town. A former works Sports & Social Club site they have gradually developed the venue. Floodlights were installed, and unveiled for the visit of Arsenal in 1981, new stands erected and more recently a new clubhouse opened and car park laid.
Their development side are lying third in the Suburban League Northern Division with a record of 5-4-2 and a goal difference of +14. In the cup they received a first round bye and then won 3-1 at Eversley & California.
Jersey made four changes to the previous round at Abbey Rangers. Jack Lumsden,
Miguel Carvalho, Joel McKinlay and Seaney McColgan coming in for Charlie Brennan, Robert Martins-Figueira, Elias-Sami Youssef and Kushal Frankson.
There were seven U18 players in the squad of fourteen.
Uxbridge started the better and in the first quarter of an hour Khalid Simmo was twice thwarted. Firstly, by a save by Pierce Roche and then by a good block from John Lloyd. After 24 minutes Harry Scott “scored” only for it to be disallowed for a hand ball in the build-up. Two minutes later Uxbridge striker Mark Bitmead hit the post as play swung to the other end.
Ten minutes from half-time Sammy Henia-Kamau made a great run but fired his shot just over the bar but four minutes later Bobby Davis gave Uxbridge the lead which they maintained to the interval.
Jersey improved in the second half without often threatening. Uxbridge changed their front three and Jersey brought on Seaney McColgan and Luke Coutanche for Miguel Carvalho and Max Rivers respectively. Jersey were handed a lifeline three minutes from time when a John Lloyd cross was handled and Sammy Sutcliffe equalised from the penalty. Harry Scott received a yellow for delaying an Uxbridge free-kick before having an opportunity in added time only to be pulled up for offside.
The match went straight to a shoot-out and Jersey won the toss and opted to have the advantage of going first. Captains Joe Kilshaw and Frankie Major made it 1-1 before Henia-Kamau and Reece brought it to 2-2. Coutanche gave Jersey the lead which they retained when Roche saved from Kai Evans. However, McColgan and then Sutcliffe had their attempts saved by Louis Sumner which allowed Luke Paris to bring Uxbridge level and then substitute Lucas Hardy to clinch their victory.
Uxbridge will now be home to Hartley Wintney U23 or Aldershot Town U19 in the Quarter-Final.
