Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup 2nd Round
The Bulls nominally enter their first team for this competition but it always understood that it was predominantly the under 23s that would be fielded. After their win at Brook House they were drawn away to Tadley Calleva whom they had met in the first round of the same competition last season when Tadley were in the Northern section of the Premier Division. On that occasion Jersey won 2-1 but Tadley were transferred to the Southern section this season and drew 0-0 at Springfield in early October.
Tadley had worked their way up through the divisions of the Wessex League and had spent the last three in the Premier Division until the F.A. re-structure moved them in to in the Combined Counties League last season. After a poor start with no wins in their first eleven matches they brought in new management. Joe Lawler and Ben Dillon moved across from Cove and lifted them to mid table security and this season they lie one place above Jersey, albeit having played three more matches.
Jersey fielded three teenagers and three under 23s in their starting line up with two other teenagers being their only substitutes. Tadley had nine first team regulars, including Dean Stow returning from injury, as they kicked off on a chilly evening defending the clubhouse end to the east.
Despite this Jersey started in the ascendancy and a cross shot from Jonny Le Quesne after ten minutes hit the right post and bounced away. Three minutes later Craig Atkinson pulled off a good save and a defender headed the follow up shot off the line.
Tadley replied after twenty minutes with their best chance of the match. From their only corner of the game the ball was half cleared and the return cross beat Pierce Roche but was hacked off the line by a swivelling James Queree.
The stalemate was ended in added time when Sammy Henia-Kamau put in a cross from the right. It pinballed about and Robert Martins-Figueira was the quickest to react. From six yards out he broke the deadlock by shooting in to the unguarded left side of the net.
Jersey maintained their ascendancy after the interval and after a succession of corners had proved fruitless it was Martins-Figueira who again played a part in the second goal. From out on the right flank he played in Lorne Bickley down the right channel and he held off a defender to finish with a powerful cross shot from just inside the area which gave Atkinson little chance.
Tadley’s Stow was sent off for reckless challenge on Henia-Kamau on the half way line and Jersey brought on Leandro Vieira and Fergus Boyle. Boyle becoming the 70th senior Bull and the youngest at 16 years and 85 days which is likely to stay the record for some time. In added time Vieira set up player of the match Henia-Kamau with a tap in at the far post to round off the evening and put Jersey in to the last 16.
