Combined Counties League Premier Division South
On a glorious spring afternoon (14C) old rivals Farnham became the first team to visit Springfield three times, whilst many of the other games in the league were postponed because of waterlogged pitches.
Farnham finished tenth last season. This season they are lie 7th with a 14-5-11 61-44 record. They have won their last four matches, including two cup ties, amongst which was a 2-1 win against local rivals Badshot Lea in the “Coxbridge” derby.
Jersey drew 1-1 at Farnham in the first match of the season when Owen Dean scored for Farnham and he was the only player that day to play again for them. Farnham had also changed their management team yet again since that August meeting. Jersey made just one change to the team that won at Balham on Tuesday with Adam Trotter replacing Kamen Nafkha in midfield. Captain James Queree became the first player to make 100 appearances for Jersey Bulls.
Farnham kicked-off attacking the Robin Hood end. The first half was cagey with two Francis Lekimamati free-kicks, the first tipped over and the second just wide, being the nearest Jersey came whilst Lamin Ceesay had a shot deflected wide after one of Farnham’s sporadic raids.
Farnham almost took the lead in the opening minute after the break. Euan Van der Vliet came out of his area to hack clear from the onrushing striker Lamal Edwards. It reached Lewis Flatman forty yards out on the right and Flatman’s return sailed past the ‘keeper, struck the right post and rebounded to a grateful Van der Vliet.
Edwards set up Ceesay a couple of minutes later who shot just wide. Jonny Le Quesne retaliated for Jersey but his twenty-yard shot was saved by Liam Harris’ legs. A Lekimamati cross was side-footed wide on the volley by Sammy Henia-Kamau before Farnham went to the other end from the resulting goal-kick. Flatman put Edwards clear on the right, Frank Tobin fell as he tracked Ceesay in the right channel and Ceesay was able to strike from five yards at the near post.
Jersey looked for the equaliser and with twelve minutes to go a Tobin 25-yard shot was pushed around his left post by Harris at full stretch. Jay Giles delivered the corner to the far post. Harris went for it, failed to get there and Luke Campbell nodded the ball back across the face of the goal where Le Quesne volleyed home from a couple of yards.
The hosts laid siege to the visitor’s goal as they went for a winner. Substitute Jack Boyle volleyed a Luke Watson cross against the right post with five minutes left and then glanced a header wide of the other post from another Giles corner. Jersey were on top but Farnham snatched victory in the eighth added minute. Flatman’s 20 yard free-kick was straight at Van der Vliet but he palmed it down and Edwards was the quickest to react and he bundled the ball home from five yards.
