Match Report

Jersey Bulls, finalists to Aldershot Town U19s last season, travelled to Chertsey based Abbey Rangers. Abbey Rangers were established as an U16 boys club in 1976, named after the nearby Benedictine Abbey, the initial burial place of Henry VI.

Their development side are currently mid-table in the Suburban League Premier Division whilst their men’s team compete in the Combined Counties Premier Division South along with the Bulls.

Jersey made a number of changes to the previous round at Marlow when the first team were also in action on the same night. Amongst those coming in to the team were John Lloyd who had been at Brook House and scored the equaliser there. Also in with him were skipper Joe Kilshaw, now recovered from injury, and Robert Martins-Figueira for his first match this season.

Fergus Boyle made his U23 debut as did new registration Elias Sami-Youssef, a former youth player with Cardiff City, who has since played for Forest Green Rovers, Royal Wootton Bassett Town (on loan), Chippenham Town, Merthyr Town, Redditch United, Melksham Town, Taunton Town and Merthyr Town again. Despite all those clubs he is still only 22 and his registration was delayed because Jersey had to obtain “international clearance” for him as his last club is Welsh.

Kushal Frankson was also making his first Jersey appearance of the season and was on the bench along with Luke Coutanche and Leandro Vieira. Missing from the squad that played at Marlow were the suspended Miguel Carvalho plus Josh Coutanche, Jay Dos Santos, Darryl Mvalo and Paddy O’Toole.

On another damp autumnal evening the hosts kicked off attacking the clubhouse end to the south of their Addlestone Moor stadium.

Jersey dominated the early stages and eventually broke through when Robert Martins-Figueira seized on some sloppy defensive play enabling Sammy Henia-Kamau to cut in from the left and give Jersey the lead. Harry Scott doubled that on the half hour by finishing off a long ball forward from Charlie Brennan.

However, before half-time a Martins-Figueira midfield pass was intercepted and played forward to striker Luke Dunn. Sammy Sutcliffe dived in with a tackle that was deemed illegal and a penalty was awarded which Oli Woolgar struck firmly to Pierce Roche’s right.

After the interval Abbey Rangers forced three corners in the first fifteen minutes and drew a couple of good saves from Roche. Jersey weathered that storm and some fearsome tackling which saw four cautions for the home team and nine minutes added to make up for the injuries they had inflicted upon the Jersey players.
