Match Report

The Bulls travelled 9 miles east of Brighton to meet the “Dockers” of Newhaven for their second F.A. Cup tie. Newhaven, like their previous opponents Horsham Y.M.C.A., play in the Premier Division of the Southern Combination. Newhaven had been well placed in both curtailed seasons. They were lying 4th in 2019-20 and 10th in 2020-21 with games in hand on those above them in both of those seasons.

This season Newhaven had opened with a draw at East Preston, followed by wins against Bexhill United and Horsham Y.M.C.A. before suffering their first loss of the season on Tuesday at Saltdean United. In the F.A. Cup they had beaten Camberley Town, Bulls’ rivals in the Combined Counties Premier South this season, 6-1.

The Bulls again made three changes to their starting line-up. James Carr came in for Jay Giles, who had not recovered from his thigh pull last week, meaning Giles missed his first ever Bulls match. In addition, Luca Margaroli and Ruben Mendes-Pestana, on the bench last week, started this time, swapping roles with Joe Kilshaw and Kieran Lester. The fourth substitute was Adam Trotter who was unavailable last week.

On a cloudy day, that saw the adjacent cricket and tennis matches abandoned when rain arrived on the hour, Jersey started off the match defending the Skate Park End, which is probably a unique sobriquet. Newhaven were combative opposition and started strongly, determined not to be overawed by the Bulls’ record.

Sol Solomon had an early half chance but his scuffed shot was easily cleared off the line by Bailie Rogers before Lukas Franzen-Jones had an opportunity at the other end which was blotted out by a lunging tackle from Kamen Nafkha.

Shortly afterwards, Jersey took the lead somewhat fortuitously. Luca Margaroli put in Solomon for a shot which was blocked. It rebounded to Margaroli twelve yards out whose shot was not hard hit but had the merit of being on target. This was sufficient as Newhaven skipper, Jake Buss, well positioned to stop it, only managed to help it in to the bottom left corner.

Four minutes later, Newhaven’s prolific striker, Lee Robinson, was set up beautifully by a slide rule pass from midfield by Seb Saunders. It bisected Jack Griffin and Luke Campbell but Euan Van der Vliet managed to get out swiftly and block the shot with his feet. Fraser Barlow fired in a riposte for the Bulls, but once again it was blocked.

Nafkha fired in another shot from twenty yards which Buss could only parry up and across his goal where the leaping Lorne Bickley attempted to finish it off. He also flattened Buss in the process and the referee deemed his attempt worthy of a yellow.

Dane Tasker replaced the dazed Buss in the Newhaven goal at half time and he became the fifth ‘keeper to face the Bulls in the F.A. Cup in just over two hours of action.

The second half opened with another contentious decision. A long ball in from the left to the back post was headed across the face of the goal towards Lee Robinson.

He was challenged by Campbell, Griffin and Nafkha in an aerial quartet that saw Robinson end up on the floor as the ball was cleared. There was minimal protest but the referee twenty-five yards away indicated that he had seen a push and awarded a 49th minute spot kick. Robinson’s brother, Ian, stepped up and shot low left but a strong right hand from Van der Vliet pushed it away towards the right side-line and eventual safety.

If that was one turning point in the match, the other came a quarter of an hour later.
Jonny Le Quesne lofted a long ball forward to the edge of the box where Solomon, marshalled by two defenders, brought it down with his right foot and then chipped the onrushing goalkeeper with his left. He made it look remarkably easy!

Campbell added a third when Barlow was floored as he was heading away from goal. The captain changed mode from his usual style and placed it in the left corner despite Tasker going the correct way.

With only a few minutes remaining Solomon put a gloss on the proceedings when a defender was not quick enough in clearing his first attempt. Without seeming to look up he turned and chipped the ball in to the right corner from twenty yards. It showed great positional awareness.

The win puts the Bulls in to the last 400 of the F.A. Cup where they will meet Vickers, Crayford and Dartford Athletic, better known as V.C.D., in the First Qualifying Round at Springfield on September 4th. V.C.D. play in the level above Jersey and won 3-2 on Saturday at Raynes Park Vale, who play in the same division as the Bulls.
